Our Momentum

Since its inception in 2013, Canterbury School’s Capital Campaign has generated extraordinary excitement and energy to become the largest and most aspirational fundraising effort in the School’s 103-year history. From a position of strength that was forged by $54 million raised in The Canterbury Moment campaign, a second phase of the strategic plan was developed by the Board of Trustees, alumni, and parent leaders. This newly defined vision became Mission and Momentum: The Campaign for Canterbury, a reignited endeavor to raise $90 million to support the School’s mission, vision, and long-range goals.

DONOVAN CENTER FOR LEARNING

The Donovan Center for Learning

The David C. Copley ‘70 Library, always an active hub of student collaboration, is now additionally well-equipped to serve the evolving needs of Canterbury students thanks to the generosity of Trustee John '59 and Dana Donovan through the Donovan Center for Learning (DCL). The DCL offers services of academic counseling, SAT/ACT preparation, peer tutoring, group tutoring sessions, individual tutoring sessions (upon evaluation of the Director), and quiet testing rooms. It also acts as a study center for students to ask homework questions, as well as address day-to-day academic concerns and questions. The DCL was dedicated at the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year and has become an integral part of the day-to-day pattern of community life.

A buildings and grounds study in 2017 revealed a significant inventory of needs on campus. Among the highest priorities was the renovation of Maguire Auditorium, the central, daily gathering place for all students and faculty within Nelson Hume Hall. $1 million was gifted in support of a summer-long project to completely renovate the 400-seat performance venue, providing improved acoustics and a modern aesthetic. The newly revitalized space, a significant enhancement to community life, was celebrated at the opening of the 2018-19 School year.
